Fun day hopes to mobilise support for centre

A FAMILY fun day is set to raise money for and awareness of a community association's £1m scheme to renovate the former Luddenden Foot civic centre.

The proposals put forward by the Luddenden Foot Community Association would see the building on Station Road transformed to include a glass extension to one corner, a new wrap-around balcony, and a walkway overlooking neighbouring Holmes Park.

After five years of progress the association has struggled this year to raise funds and attract interest from people who are prepared to give their time and support to the project.

Currently the present building is used by the Playgroup, Luddenden Foot Women's Institute, United Reformed Church, Boys Brigade and various sports teams.

But the facilities are dated and not up to modern standards, so ideas for a renovation project have been under way since 2005.

The Party in the Park event takes place in Holmes Park, Station Road, Luddenden Foot on September 25 from noon to 4pm. There will be circus acts, a puppet theatre, games and magic, balloon modelling and a full-sized parachute for fun and games.

There will also be a bouncy castle, face painting, refreshments and lots of stalls. Admission will be 1 for adults and is free for children.

The event last May Day saw around 1,500 people in attendance and organisers are hoping for similar success.

Jill Smith-Moorhouse, chairman of the group, said: "This building could be an asset transfer from Calderdale Council, similar to the Hebden Bridge Town Hall.

"Our association became a company limited by guarantee last August and desperately needs a solid committee to take the project forward.

"An accountant is needed, a replacement secretary for next year, and the sports side needs a representative.

"The civic centre and playing fields hold huge potential for the people of Luddenden Foot and surrounding area. There is a desperate shortage of meeting places for community groups. The playgroup especially is desperate for improved facilities, and the sports teams need improved changing and shower rooms.

"There are endless possibilities with an improved building. We could have a library with internet access, business opportunities and offices, public events, even weddings."

Anyone interested should contact Ms Smith-Moorhouse on 01422 881027.
