Gambling addict murdered dad and left his body in bin bags
An East Yorkshire man was yesterday found guilty of killing his father and leaving his body in bin bags for three years.
The body of Frank Garner, 62, was found in a field near East Cowick last June.
He had been reported missing in July 2005.
Following a trial at Hull Crown Court his son Richard Garner, 31, from Goole was found guilty of his murder and was told he must serve a minimum of 16 years.
The court had heard he killed his father for money and was equipped to leave the area after his body was found. Despite being in debt, engineer Richard Garner paid cash for a car and had enough kit to live rough in France.
The trial heard he was a gambler and had lost money and had written notes pretending to be from two men demanding money from his father.
Richard Garner did not want his father to go to the police about the notes. He claimed his father had been killed by criminal contacts he made from selling contraband tobacco and alcohol.
Senior investigating officer Det Supt Christine Kelk, said: "This case was a very difficult and complex one to investigate and clearly involved a series of events that took place over a considerable period of time.
"It is very sad for a man to have lost his life at the hands of his own son and as we have heard for this to have come about as a result of greed and financial gain it makes it all the more tragic.
"What Richard Garner did to his father is despicable and the fact that he carried on leading his life as though nothing had happened for three years after killing his father demonstrates how callous he is.
"Furthermore, to maintain the lies and deceit throughout the investigation and indeed the court case reinforces this."
She added: "I feel extremely sorry for the families involved and hope that they can begin to find some peace at last.
"I welcome the verdict and the sentence that has been passed which I believe reflects the nature of the offence."
Frank Garner's remains were found by a man walking his dog.
He was identified by DNA tests.
He lived alone in a council flat in Old Goole, and was retired. He found walking difficult because of back trouble and would regularly take taxis into the town centre to socialise with friends.
