Gay and lesbian police among Pride festival marchers
A COLOURFUL parade kicked off a day of music, dance and revelry as Doncaster celebrated its second annual Pride festival yesterday.
The "Walk of Unity" from Mansion House to Market Place was well attended not only by members of the public but also gay and lesbian police officers, who had been given permission to march in
uniform.
At 3pm the stage show began, with acts including DJ Marky Mark, Kylie Minogue tribute act The Kylie Experience, local band My Sobriquet and jazz performers Fiona and Glenn as well as headliner Katrina Leskanich, formerly of 1997 Eurovision winners Katrina and the Waves.
Other draws included a market, food court, fairground and entertainment such as buskers and stilt walkers.
Two fire engines from Doncaster and Edlington fire stations were also at
the festival running a variety of activities, while members of the fire service's lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender (LGBT) staff group spoke to members of the public.
Doncaster fire station manager Shaun Pilley said: "We're very pleased to be involved in such an important community event.
"Our LGBT staff group were on hand to share their experiences and show that careers in the fire service are open to everyone."
The festival has grown significantly since its launch last year, with up to 5,000 people estimated to have attended yesterday's event.
Singer Jane McDonald lent her support by agreeing to become the first Doncaster Pride patron and organisers also succeeded in gaining funds from both the National Lottery Awards for All and the South Yorkshire Police Authority ABC Awards.
