Giant Atlas moth found in Yorkshire
Paul Whitehouse WITH its six inch wingspan the Atlas moth is aptly named, but experts have been left baffled about how an example of the South East Asian species ended up flying into a Sheffield house.
A quick-witted resident used a fishing net to catch it and the moth is now an exhibit at the Tropical Butterfly House in North Anston, though visitors may only have days left to see it as the adult Atlas moths do not feed and have a lifespan of only a few weeks.
According to staff, the moth would have been unlikely to survive at all if the country had not been in the grip of a heatwave.
However, they are mystified how the creature ended up in a house at Millhouses, as it would have been unlikely to have been able to fly from its natural habitat.
