Gunmen jailed for village shootings
A JUDGE jailed two gunmen yesterday after a series of shootings in a West Yorkshire village.
The violence in South Kirkby ended with 32-year-old Sean Neesam being blasted in the shoulder at point-blank range with a shotgun.
Mr Neesam was in hospital for five weeks after the shooting in Wentworth Drive last November, Bradford Crown Court heard.
Shortly before Mr Neesam was shot by 26-year-old David Magee, there had been two other incidents when the weapon had been discharged.
Magee fired across the street at Mr Neesam's associate, Paul Cooper. Shortly afterwards, Magee's neighbour, 40-year-old Stephen Lakin, shot out a window at Mr Neesam's home while his girlfriend Sally Gascoigne was there alone.
Last month, a jury cleared Magee and Lakin, both of Park Estate, South Kirkby, near Pontefract, of attempted murder, but found them guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Mr Neesam.
The defendants were each also found guilty of possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence in relation to the earlier shootings.
Judge Wolstenholme jailed Lakin for a minimum term of seven years, 312 days and Magee, for seven years, 313 days.
He explained that they would only be released if the Parole Board decided they no longer posed a risk.
Sam Whitehead, 18, of Kettlethorpe Road, Wakefield, was also present in the car when Mr Neesam was shot.
He was also cleared of attempted murder, but was locked up at a young offenders' institution for four years and 291 days after also being convicted of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
A fourth man, Russell Evans, 32, of Tonbridge Crescent, Kinsley, was jailed for six months after he was found guilty of perverting the course of justice.
