Hammer blow brings backing to children's breakfast club
AMERICAN rapper and entertainer MC Hammer is due to visit a Sheffield primary school this morning to launch a campaign aimed at promoting healthy breakfast clubs.
The singer, whose real name is Stanley Kirk Burrell, has been signed up by charity Feed The Children (UK) which is raising cash for better provision for youngsters in the morning.
Mr Burrell has been heavily involved in a similar drive run by Feed the Children in the United States, and is serving breakfasts at Sheffield's Hartley Brook Primary School as part of the British effort.
Speaking yesterday, he said: "I'm delighted to support such a worthwhile campaign here in the UK. By donating money to the Breakfast2Live campaign we can ensure that more children around the world get the right they deserve – to eat breakfast."
Breakfast2Live is calling on cafes, restaurants, schools, colleges, businesses and individuals to get involved and stage their own breakfast events and donate the proceeds to the charity.
The charity said cash raised would be spent not only on breakfast clubs for schoolchildren in the UK, but will also contribute to lifesaving projects in the developing world.
Mr Burrell said he had a long-running relationship with Feed The Children in the US, having been involved in events including the distribution of food to needy families.
The effort is also being sponsored by the Sheffield-based British branch of American gold buying company Cash4Gold, which buys precious metals directly from the consumer.
Cash4Gold is also involved with Feed The Children in the US.
CEO Jeff Aronson said: "Cash4Gold supports Feed The Children in the US and we're pleased to do the same in the UK. By donating to Feed The Children we can ensure that more children in Sheffield and around the country will be able to eat breakfast – the most important meal of the day, and something that so many unfortunately have to go without."
Brian Main, chief executive of Feed The Children said: "WEe are asking people to take time out for just one meal to think about the thousands of children who need our help in this country and abroad."
