James and Oliver Phelps, who play Fred and George Weasley in the Harry Potter films, were in Bradford yesterday to officially open the 45th Co-operative Film Festival.

The annual festival, held at the National Media Museum, in Bradford, yesterday and today, will showcase 92 films, made by youngsters aged 19 and under, on the big screen.

Twins James and Oliver Phelps, who first appeared in the Harry Potter series when they were 14 and have gone on to feature in all eight films, launched the festival yesterday. They also signed autographs and took part in a question and answer session with festival-goers.

Throughout the event budding young directors also got the chance to take part in workshops and talks, from special effects make-up, screenwriting and animation to acting and filming in 3D.

This year’s festival attracted more than 160 productions from young film-makers, schools, colleges, youth and art groups, with 92 shortlisted for screening. Entries came from throughout the UK and also Europe.

Festival organiser, Alicia Walker, said: “We are delighted to welcome James and Oli Phelps to launch the 2011 Co-operative Film Festival.”
