Health checks on offer at the Great Yorkshire
The NFU is offering free health checks at the Great Yorkshire Show, to remind farmers they can no longer assume the job keeps them fit.
Now there is a machine for almost everything, many of them are storing up problems, according to Halifax farmer Frank Chislett, West Riding delegate to the NFU Council, who had a heart attack in 2007, aged 57.
He said: "Looking back, the possibility that I had high cholesterol never occurred to me.
"I have never smoked and I don't eat junk
food.
"But I liked a pint of beer, the biscuit barrel and the odd liquorice allsort.
"I thought I was indestructible.
"I hadn't been a patient in hospital for nearly 40 years and that was only for a broken nose. When they checked, my cholesterol count was 8.1 – a ridiculously high reading as I now realise – and it really brought me up sharp."
Mr Chislett started running with Halifax Harriers and has lost three and a half stone.
Two male nurses will offer advice and test blood pressure in the NFU tent, from 9am to 3pm on Tuesday, July 14 and from 11am to 3pm on Wednesday, July 15, which are the first two days of the three-day event at the Harrogate Showground.
Supporting the showground initiative, Jane Riley, who is the government's associate director of public health for Yorkshire, said: "It's hard to keep active, eat a healthy diet and manage stress levels when it's a 365-day job, with a load of responsibility and the vagaries of the British weather to contend with.
"Men in particular tend to hope that 'it will just go away' and fear that seeking help will make them look as if they can't cope.
"For farmers, it's even harder to find the time to get any concerns checked out and as a result, minor problems can become major ones."
