Heartbeat star honoured by home university
HEARTBEAT star Bill Maynard is to receive an honorary degree from De Montford University in Leicester, along with football legend Gary Lineker.
Maynard, 80, who played Greengrass in the long-running Yorkshire-based TV show, will be made an Honorary Doctor of Arts – recognition he declared "more worthy than a knighthood".
Both men have strong links to Leicester and Maynard said: "To get any form of degree you need to earn it and that is why this is a real achievement for me and is so much more important. Students work hard to achieve their qualifications and I am proud to be awarded one alongside them.
"Leicester has been my home since just after I was born. It means a great deal to me to be honoured by the university."
Lineker will now have a hat-trick of honorary degrees after receiving similar accolades from nearby University of Leicester and Loughborough University.
The former Leicester City and England player will be made an Honorary Doctor of Letters with further awards going to Bend it Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha, artist Bridget Riley, and Claire Bertschinger, former International Red Cross nurse who was the inspiration for Band Aid.
