Heatwave alert misses out North
A heatwave warning for most of England was issued last night, but the North is likely to miss out.
A belt of hot air from southern Europe is travelling towards the UK but the North is likely to feel only an edge of it and that will have been cooled by the North Sea.
However, London is likely to swelter.
The trigger for a heat-wave warning for London is an expectation of 32C (89F) during the day, and 15C at night, followed by 32C again – and that is what is predicted for Monday and Tuesday, and probably Wednesday too. In fact, night-time temperatures in the capital are not expected to drop below 19C or 20C (66F).
London often gets hot and the trigger for the Department of Health's emergency plans is lower elsewhere – 29C-15C-29C in the North.
But there is only a 40 per cent chance of those temperatures being reached in the North West and the North East, said the Met Office.
The East of England, South West, South East and Midlands, are expected to see the highest temperatures outside London. A spokesman for MeteoGroup UK, said: "It will become quite oppressive in places next week. There is also a growing risk of thunderstorms throughout the week."
Most of the country will get at least some fine warm weather this week.
