Historic tower task for ghost hunters

Brian Dooks LENDAL Tower has stood guard over the River Ouse in York for 700 years. But do the spirits of previous centuries still linger inside?

Tomorrow a team of psychic specialists will attempt to find out and on Hallowe'en the public is being given a rare chance to tour the tower.

Ghost hunters from PSI – Paranormal and Spectral Investigations – will undertake an overnight vigil at the tower as part of York Ghost Festival. Lendal Tower was built in the early 1300s as part of York's defences and became the city's first waterworks in the 17th century.

Last month the tower was bought by North Yorkshire businessman David Hattersley, who is converting it into an unusual place to stay.

PSI's Rachel Lacy said: "With the amount of history linked to the site and building, there is potential here for a very exciting night."

When Mr Hattersley bought the tower he promised to give the public regular access. The first chance to look around it is next Tuesday.

History expert Shona Griffiths will conduct six 40-minute tours. Pre-booking is essential - telephone 0870 243 0765 to book by credit card or call in person at Marmadukes Hotel, St Peter's Grove, Bootham, York.
