History told through voices
Historian Van Wilson, author of Stonegate Voices, an oral history of one of York's famous streets, Stonegate, is pictured in the thoroughfare.
Stonegate Voices is the third volume in York Archaeological Trust's oral history series and records memories of 70 people in and around Stonegate, between 1905 and 1980. It was launched yesterday at the Barley Hall medieval townhouse, just off Stonegate.
Dame Judi Dench has gone back to her roots to help promote the book, recalling York from the days of the Edwardians to Margaret Thatcher.
Dame Judi, whose father GP Dr Reginald Dench had a practice in the area and whose mother attended St Helen's Church, provides the foreword.
Van Wilson said: "The book provides an insight into life in the Stonegate area from the early 20th century onwards, and examines many of the crafts and businesses which are long gone but which form an important part of the social history of our city."
A podcast of the interviews with contributors can be downloaded from.barleyhall.org.uk. Stonegate Voices is available from the Jorvik Viking Centre shop and local bookshops. An exhibition based on the book will be held at Barley Hall next year.
