Hope for 'secret garden'

CAMPAIGNERS trying to save what they call a "secret garden" have won a stay of execution after planners refused to rule on a development scheme for the area.

Broomhill Neighbourhood Group (BANG) has been fighting plans for a housing development on the site of a former student halls of residence in Taptonville Road, Sheffield.

The group claims a plan submitted by Miller Homes for the site, which is owned by Sheffield University, would "destroy a piece of the city's heritage forever".

BANG would prefer to save the site of the garden and apply for lottery funding to turn it into a park while allowing building to continue around it.

But until now, the university has refused to meet the campaigners and members of Sheffield Council's city centre, south and east planning board, voiced "concern" over the lack of dialogue.

Members of the committee agreed to defer the decision on the development for a fortnight, to allow time for more meetings to take place both over the garden and over the number of affordable houses provided by the scheme.
