Hotel future is uncertain after sale
A LANDMARK hotel has closed unexpectedly with staff ordered to quit their living premises, leaving a question mark over the future of the building.
The Crescent Hotel in Ilkley was owned by the Liverpool- based Cains Beer Company until that firm went into administration last August.
According to staff at Cains, the Crescent was sold almost immediately by the administrators, but continued to trade until staff were told without warning they were all being made redundant.
Cains said they did not know who the purchaser was.
Five employees who live at the premises, at the junction of Leeds Road and Brook Street, have been given four weeks' notice to leave the premises and within hours of the announcement, a team of workers had moved in to remove stock from the kitchens and bar areas and to change the locks.
The business had a total of 20 workers. It means staff who still need access to the building can now only get into their own accommodation, rather than public areas of the hotel.
