Householders shine out in table for DIY power generation

HOUSEHOLDERS in South Yorkshire are powering ahead in a national league table for installing renewable energy equipment such as solar panels on their homes, new figures show.

Barnsley is in seventh position in the UK’s “micro-generation index” which includes wind, solar and hydro power projects, while Sheffield and Rotherham lie in ninth and 10th position.

Experts have compiled the figures based on information from energy regulator Ofgem, and said the eco-friendly picture in South Yorkshire is even brighter when just solar energy schemes are considered.

Homes in Barnsley are second only to Cornwall for solar power projects, while Sheffield lies in third place, with Rotherham fourth and Doncaster sixth.

It is thought the high number of schemes can be partly explained by a relatively high concentration of solar energy companies operating in South Yorkshire.

The study by energy consultants AEA examined 380 local authority areas and counted home-based projects which export energy to the National Grid under the Government’s Feed-in Tariff.

John Mallinder, Barnsley Council’s Energy Officer, said renewable technology continues to grow.

He added “Generating your own electricity improves security of supply and reduces demand on the National Grid. Empowering residents in this way also helps to counter fuel poverty.”
