Hundreds of jobs to go at council
HUNDREDS of workers employed by Kirklees Council are to lose their jobs.
The council is set to slash its budget by a fifth and the plan is to save at least 250m over five years.
Kirklees director of human resources, Cliff Stewart, said many of the council's 11,000 workforce would go. He said: "There will be staff reductions – many hundreds of jobs. We will move heaven and earth to avoid compulsory redundancies.''
The shock news will see a major review of how all council services except education are managed – including senior management posts.
Kirklees Council chief executive, Rob Vincent, said he hoped the council would increase productivity as well as make savings.
He said: "This is about rising to a difficult challenge. We need to redesign services, work differently with partners and make changes to our management and staff structure whilst maintaining front-line services won't suffer as a result."
Kirklees is one of the biggest metropolitan councils in the country with a staff of around 19,000, including education staff who will not be affected, and an annual overall spend of 1bn in its combined capital and revenue budgets.
