Jack is back on the tracks

Historic steam locomotive Jack returns to action at Leeds Industrial Museum at Armley Mills.

The narrow-track loco, which was named by its builders at the Hunslet Engine Company at Jack Lane during construction in 1898, is now looking better than ever following extensive repairs to the boiler.

Among the guests were many of the Friends of Leeds Museums who watched the first run with Coun John Procter, Leeds City Council executive member for leisure, on the footplate.

The repairs were carried out by Leeds City Council with the help of a grant from the Friends of Leeds City Museums. Jack is a very rare example of a narrow gauge locomotive typical of major construction projects which is still in full working order over 100 years after being built.

It was built in Hunslet to order for John Knowles Metal Box Ltd, manufacturers of fire bricks and earthenware pipes, and was used at its Ashby de la Zouch works in Leicestershire transporting clay materials to and from the kilns.

A works photograph of Jack taken before despatch in 1898 is shown at the right.
