Jobs boost for town as work starts on leisure complex
A NEW £21m sport and leisure complex in Scunthorpe is creating a jobs boost for the town's economy.
Work starts today on "The Pods" – which is expected to create 150 construction jobs in the town.
The first sod should be cut by North Lincolnshire Council leader Mark Kirk, in a ceremony attended by Yorkshire Forward chairman Terry Hodgkinson.
Councillor Kirk said: "I am very excited that work is finally about to start. This project has been a long time in the making but now what we are about to witness is the start of something very special.
"The Pods and nearby Central Park improvements will not only regenerate Scunthorpe, but will provide a lasting landmark with its unique design, for future generations to enjoy.
"And the creation of much-needed jobs will have a knock-on effect on the local supply chain, bringing a welcome boost to the local economy."
The work is being paid for by the Council, Yorkshire Forward and Sport England.
Mr Hodgkinson said: "This is a huge step forward in the regeneration of Scunthorpe and is an incredible example of our on-going work to build sustainable buildings, businesses and communities, throughout Yorkshire and Humber.
"The Pods and Central Park provide state of the art sports facilities for the whole community and a wonderful space for everyone to experience and enjoy."
The complex is also intended to act as a catalyst for wider regeneration plans for North Lincolnshire.
The facilities will include a 25-metre swimming pool, a training pool, a state-of-the-art gym, a dance studio, a six-court sports hall, a caf and a crche.
