Jury retires to consider verdict on nurse accused of murder
A JURY has retired to consider its verdict on a nurse accused of murdering four elderly patients and trying to kill a fifth at hospitals in Leeds.
Colin Norris, formerly of Kirkstall, Leeds, is accused of giving them insulin overdoses to cause the women to suffer hypoglycaemic comas and then death.
None of the five were diabetic and there would have been no reason for them to have been given the drug.
Prosecutors have claimed the 31-year-old nurse was motivated by his dislike of geriatric patients and had in fact predicted the time that one of the women, Ethel Hall, would die during his night shift.
Norris denies murdering Bridge Bourke, Mrs Hall, 86, and Doris Ludlam, 80, while working at Leeds General Infirmary and murdering Irene Crookes while working at St James's Hospital, in 2002.
He also denies attempting to murder them or Vera Wilby, 90.
