Key skills passed down as craftsmen build on centuries of experience
Old skills are being handed down to a new generation of builders to ensure the preservation of some of Ryedale's most historic architecture.
The Earth Stone and Lime Company teamed up with landowners the Fitzwilliam Estate and the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings to host a Lime Workshop in Yorkersgate, Malton.
Aimed at all levels of the building trade, the lime workshop offered experience in the use of lime and lime mortars for fixing traditional buildings
Nigel Copsey, of the Earth Stone and Lime Company, said: "As much as 85 per cent of the repair works done to old buildings are dealing with the decay and the damage caused by the use of inappropriate and incompatible materials over the past 60 years.
"All buildings built before 1919, and many built before 1940, were built to traditional patterns of construction. All of them need to breathe and therefore all require the attentions of craftsmen informed in traditional materials, using traditional skills."
Lime mortar, used in association with mud, hemp and straw, is also key to the future production of zero carbon housing, according to Roddy Bushell, estate manager at the Estate.
