Kitchen porter denies murder
A KITCHEN porter killed a fellow worker when he stabbed him in the abdomen during a confrontation at the restaurant where they worked, a jury heard.
The man who died, Bangla-deshi Syed Ghulan Zilani, a porter at the India Palace in Smyth Street, Wakefield, had allegedly complained to his wife that he was being bullied at work by Mohammed Ahmed.
Christopher Batty prosecuting told Leeds Crown Court yesterday the two men came from different regions of Bangledesh which led to some problems in their working relationship.
On Saturday June 14 last year they had a disagreement about the way Mr Zilani, 48, had washed up a tray and nearly came to blows with Ahmed allegedly picking up a knife saying he was going to kill Mr Zilani.
Mr Batty told the jury a chef disarmed Ahmed and the two men were separated but later, early on Sunday June 15, it was claimed Ahmed got a knife and fatally stabbed Mr Zilani.
The stabbing happened in a corridor and there were no witnesses.
The same chef had seen Ahmed return and pick up a knife and tried to grab him as he went past but managed to catch only his collar. Ahmed's jacket came off as he ran into the corridor.
"It is quite clear shortly after he plunged the knife into the deceased's abdomen," said Mr Batty.
Members of staff went out to find Mr Zilani standing injured while Ahmed was holding the knife. An ambulance was called but Mr Zilani died soon afterwards at Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield.
Ahmed, 31, of Elizabeth Street, Bradford, denies the murder of Mr Zilani of Ramsey Street, Bradford.
Ahmed later told police he was attacked by and stabbed him in self defence.
Mr Zilani's widow Husna Layla told the jury he believed most of those at the restaurant disliked him.
