PRIMARY school pupils were given a behind-the-scenes tour of a government research centre yesterday – in the hope of inspiring the next generation of scientists.

The children aged 10 and 11 from Osbaldwick Primary School were given an insight into the work that is carried out at the Food and Environment Research Agency (FERA) at Sand Hutton, near York.

The tour of the complex included a look at the centre’s apiary and honey bees, laboratories and greenhouses.

But the children were most excited about a microbiology workshop – which involved a hands-on session looking at mould.

FERA’s head of organisational development, Lynn Gray, said: “This is a golden opportunity for us to open our doors to local children and inspire the next generations of scientists.”

The visit was organised by the newly launched York Children’s University, part of national scheme which celebrates the achievements of youngsters through a certificated programme and graduations.

The Osbaldwick Primary School pupils have been exploring the science of food with York University student volunteers during the last four weeks, discussing farming and food miles, food packaging and healthy diets.
