Language game aims to reign in Spain

SORTING out your 'tapas' from your 'chapas' should never be a problem again thanks to a new board game developed by two East Yorkshire businessmen.

John Ainsley and Stephen Foster have spent the last eight years developing the game after Mr Foster hit on a new way of teaching his 11-year-old son a few basic Spanish phrases.

And it's now available in the USA – and in Spain.

The pair have been hard at work over the dining table at Mr Ainsley's home in Welton thrashing out the details including their own system of phonetics.

The result, they say, is an easy way to learn some conversational Spanish in minutes – and have fun.

The board game Comprendo! was on display yesterday at Princes Quay shopping centre in Hull.

Mr Ainsley, whose day job is a property developer, said: "Stephen's son Oliver found Spanish at school boring and didn't want to do his homework. Stephen had an idea of a piece of paper with questions and answers and I thought it was wonderful idea.

"We've used a Spanish teacher, Isobel Smedley, to set the questions and included the usual places you take children on package holidays.

"This was not done for any commercial reasons but we've supplied it in America to universities and schools and retail

outlets in Spain as well as the UK.

"When children play it they are totally inspired by the excitement of picking up a foreign language.

"At the moment we are working with Malet Lambert School, in Hull."

Since its launch in September, they have sold more than 400 and they now want to expand it into 10 languages.

Anyone wanting more information can visit the website comprendogame.com.

The game costs 29.95 including post and packaging.
