Leeds Utd legend launches 2009 Jane Tomlinson run

LEEDS UNITED legend Eddie Gray and BBC sports presenter Gabby Logan joined Jane Tomlinson's widower Mike in Leeds today to launch the 2009 Leeds 10k - Jane Tomlinson's Run For All.

This year's event raised a staggering 750,000, it was announced at the launch, topping the 500,000 raised by the 2007 run by a massive 250,000.

It is hoped that 15,000 people will join the Run For All in Leeds in 2009 to raise 1m for charity.

Mrs Tomlinson's son, Steven, who attended the launch in Leeds said his mum would have been pleased with the amount raised this year: "Mum would be really, really thrilled because its what she aimed to do, its what she wanted to do," he said.

Mike Tomlinson said: "The whole team is thrilled at the success of the first two years. It is fantastic that in such a short space of time so much has been raised for charity."

The 2009 event which will be on Sunday, June 21, and runners have already registered to take part.

Eddie Gray, who plans to take part in the 2009 run said: "I support the run because what Jane Tomlinson achieved in her lifetime and how she bore her illness was an example to everybody."

The run is just a part of the great legacy of Mrs Tomlinson, who organised the inaugural Leeds 10k. She was too ill to take part in the event but was at the finish line to clap home everyone who entered.

The inspirational mother-of-three, from Rothwell, Leeds, defied doctors, who gave her just months to live in 2000. She took part in a series of challenges to raise money for charity – including three London Marathons, several triathlons and an epic 4,000-mile coast to coast ride across America.

The 43-year-old NHS radiographer lost her seven-year battle with cancer in September 2007.

Mrs Tomlinson's son, Steven, 10, followed in his mother's footsteps in June when he officially started this year's 10k race, which was supported by the Yorkshire Post as a media partner.

He was joined at the event, less than 10 months after Mrs Tomlinson's death, by his father and sisters Suzanne and Rebecca.

Runners gave a one-minute round of applause in tribute to Mrs Tomlinson before the race got under way.
