Listen up...innovative project issues invitation to the young

MOBILE phone users in Bradford are being invited to explore an "invisible art gallery" in the city's Lister Park area this weekend.

Sounds Like Graffiti is a new project encouraging young people from the city's most deprived communities to express themselves through creative writing, audio production and digital technology.

The project features a collection of stories about urban life and will be broadcast to the public through their mobile phones.

On Saturday and Sunday, visitors to Lister Park can tune into a 13-episode play based on the story of Homer's Odyssey.

Shabina Aslam, director of the project, said: "Lister Park will become an art gallery, but one where the art is invisible and maps out how young people feel about living in the city. Sounds Like Graffiti will follow one girl's journey to find her wayward brother. On her quest she goes through Lister Park, gets lost and experiences a series of fantastical adventures.

"Our play has unearthed some amazing local talent. It delivers a powerful message about adversities faced by Bradford's young people, of all backgrounds, every day.

"Through storytelling we shatter many negative stereotypes that are heaped on Bradford's youth."

The project draws upon a pool of artists and storytellers from the area to bring the story to life and the play itself has encouraged a new generation of artists to harness their untapped creativity.

The 13-part play will also be broadcast online and on local radio, but the most interactive experience is reserved for those who visit Lister Park this weekend between 2pm and 6pm.
