M1 to shut for bridge installation

A STRETCH of the M1 in South Yorkshire will be shut on Saturday night to allow for the installation of a new footbridge.

The motorway will close between junctions 36 and 37, near Barnsley, from 9pm to 9am on Sunday.

The work is dependent on weather conditions on the day, as lifting the bridge into place can be affected by high winds.

During the closure, signed diversion routes will be in place:

Long-distance northbound traffic should leave the M1 at junction 32 and follow the M18, the A1(M) at Wadworth and the M62, before re-joining the M1 northbound at junction 42 (Lofthouse). Long-distance southbound traffic should follow the same route in reverse.

Local northbound traffic should leave at junction 36 and follow the A61 (Tankersley), the A616, the A629 (via Wortley and Thurgoland) and the A628 before re-joining the M1 northbound at junction 37. Local southbound traffic should follow the same route in reverse.

Pedestrians will be able to cross the M1 via the disused Rob Royd railway bridge.

The closure is part of an ongoing Highways Agency project to replace the concrete footbridge at Stainborough, one mile south of junction 37, with a new 55-metre steel bridge.

Other maintenance and upgrading work is also being carried out at the site, and it is expected to be completed by the end of August.
