Man held after baby found alone in hot car
A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of neglect after firefighters in Huddersfield rescued a baby girl left alone in a hot car.
The 12-month-old baby was spotted by CCTV cameras in a parked car yesterday morning.
She had reportedly been left in the vehicle for up to 40 minutes on one of the hottest days so far this year.
Firefighters were forced to smash the window of the car before they could rescue the baby.
A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "Police attended a car park in Alfred Street, Huddersfield at about 11am yesterday following reports of a child left alone in a car.
"Officers attended alongside the Fire Service, who gained entry to the vehicle and recovered a one-year-old girl.
"A 51-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of neglect."
Fire crews were called to the car park at 10.49am, a fire service spokeswoman said.
Andy Flynn, watch manager of Huddersfield Fire Station, said: "There was a little baby girl who had been in the car for 40 minutes.
"She seemed quite calm but it was quite a hot day and it looked like she was getting hot.
"We had to smash one of the windows to rescue her."
Temperatures in the Yorkshire region hovered at around 16 degrees yesterday, more than nine degrees higher than the mean UK average.
