Masons try to dispel age-old myths
ONE of the oldest Masonic lodges in North Yorkshire is opening its doors to try to dispel centuries-old myths about the organisation.
Members of the Falcon Lodge in Thirsk, which was consecrated in 1872 before moving into its current premises two years later, are hoping to give an insight into Freemasonry with the open day a week tomorrow.
Visitors will get guided tours around parts of the lodge usually reserved only for members and get to handle some of the valuable regalia.
Lodge member Terry Burt said the event is to give people a better understanding of how the ancient organisation has moved into the 21st century, with a key focus on supporting the local community and national charities.
He added: "A huge amount of mystery surrounds the Masonic movement, and of course we cherish our history and the symbols which are so deeply ingrained in how we conduct business.
"But Masonry has always had the community and charity at its heart, and we want to dispel some of the more sinister myths that people may have come to believe as a result of our portrayal in books and films."
