Massive inland port set for approval despite protests
PLANNERS in Doncaster are expected to approve plans today for a huge rail freight terminal in the south of the borough despite opposition from residents and countryside campaigners.
The scheme, which is expected to create up to 4,000 jobs, has been given the backing of senior council planning officers, and will be considered by councillors this morning.
If approved, the terminal, called an "inland port" would be built on a site near Rossington and according to developer Helioslough it would include more than 500,000 sq m of warehouse space.
In a report to the planning committee, officers say: "A previous forecast of 5,819 jobs is reduced to 4,364 new jobs as some existing posts are likely to be transferred to the inland port from elsewhere.
"However, it is estimated that some 873 additional jobs are created off site as spending and supply chains will support other businesses. The development is likely to be phased over several years and these figures are for a fully operational site."
The developer has estimated that 68 per cent of the new jobs would be warehouse staff, 11 per cent admin workers, 13 per cent drivers and seven per cent management positions.
If permission for the development is given, the developers would be expected to make contributions to the local road network. It is expected that the site would be connected to the rail network via the East Coast main line, which runs along the boundary to the site, and also to motorways via the nearby M18.
Opposition has been mounted by several parish councils, including those in Rossington, Wadworth, Loversall and Tickhill, with protesters claiming that it is inappropriate use of greenbelt land. They are supported by the Campaign to Protect Rural England and the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.
A final decision on the scheme would have to made by central Government if councillors approve the plans.
