Medieval day on battle anniversary

The Battle of Wakefield took place more than half a millennium ago – and to celebrate its 550th anniversary Sandal Castle is hosting a day of medieval activities.

Visitors to the castle on September 19 will be able to witness a theatrical display based on the battle there and birds of prey will swoop above as part of a falconry display.

For those who like to get involved, there will be the chance to prove throwing skills in a game of quoits – a medieval version of hoopla, or engage in a tournament of battledore – a historical form of badminton.

Children will be able to become knights for a day in junior jousting, featuring costumes and lances like the ones worn in medieval times.

Knights in shining armour will also be on hand for any history enthusiasts to talk to about the real-life weapons and tools from the War of the Roses era which will be on display at the fun day.

Coun David Dagger, Wakefield Council's Cabinet member for Culture, said: "We are very proud of Wakefield's significance and heritage in the War of the Roses, and this educational day out will be a great way for children, families and local residents to learn more about the district's history."
