Meet the Queen, she's a real sweetie
THEY were a favourite of former American president Ronald Reagan, and now appear to have been given the Royal seal of approval.
A mosaic of the Queen made up of thousands of jelly beans is now on show at sweet shop Bah Humbugs in the North Yorkshire village of Masham.
The confectionery portrait has been created using Jelly Belly jelly beans, which were first produced in 1976 and became a firm favourite of President Reagan.During his presidency, Jelly Belly jelly beans were served in the Oval Office and on the official aircraft of the president, Air Force One.
A holder was specially designed for the aeroplane to prevent the jar of jelly beans spilling during turbulence. They were also the first jelly beans in outer space when President Reagan sent a batch on the 1983 flight of the space shuttle, Challenger.
The Queen's portrait, which was created for her Golden Jubilee and depicts the monarch at the time of her Coronation, has been brought up from London to mark the opening of Bah Humbugs' new premises on the Market Square in Masham.
It is one of a handful of jelly bean portraits in the country, which include a mosaic of Elvis Presley on display in Madame Tussauds in London.
The owner of Bah Humbugs, Lucy Scott Paul, who set up the sweet shop in May 2004, has customers from as far afield as South Africa, Germany and France who buy Jelly Belly jelly beans from her.
She said: "I wanted to mark the occasion of relocating to bigger premises with something a little bit different.
"We weren't able to get the actual Queen to come and open the new store, so it seemed the next best thing was to bring the mosaic of Her Majesty up here."
There were originally eight flavours of Jelly Belly jelly beans introduced in 1976, but the range has now expanded to 50 different types, including crushed pineapple, cherry cola and pia colada.
