Memorial service for 'cutlery king'
A PUBLIC memorial service will be held in Sheffield Cathedral to celebrate the life of the city's "cutlery king" David Mellor, who died on May 7 aged 78.
The service will be held on Thursday, October 1 at 6.30pm. Friends, ex-colleagues and members of the public have all been invited by Mr Mellor's family.
Mr Mellor, who rose to become one of the best-known designers in the country, was born in Sheffield and was responsible for everyday objects including the traffic light.
He also designed cutlery and was responsible for the restoration of Sheffield's historic Broom Hall, which he and his associated made into a design and cutlery workshop.
Mr Mellor later moved his operations to a custom designed workshop in Hathersage in the Peak District on the edge of Sheffield and work continues there under his son Corin.
Addresses will be given by writer and broadcaster Paul Allen and Peter Blundell Jones, a Professor of Architecture at Sheffield University.
The lesson will be read by Sheffield's Master Cutler Martin Howell, and the preacher will be Kenneth Bowler, a friend of Mr Mellor's for over 40 years and and expert on the silver he designed for churches and cathedrals.
