More can be trained in dental unit
MORE dentists will be trained in modern conditions in South Yorkshire after Sheffield University's refurbished and expanded dental practice unit (DPU) is officially opened today.
The unit, which has had a 500,000 facelift, provides fourth and final year dental students space to treat patients under the supervision of university staff.
The unit's five dental chairs for students' use has been increased to ten.
The expansion means more students can work with patients and they can see more patients in a day. In October 2005 the University's School of Clinical Dentistry's yearly undergraduate intake rose from 60 to 80.
Dental unit director Keith Figures said: "I hope the unit
will further strengthen Sheffield Dental School's international reputation for excellence in learning and teaching and cement our position as one of the top dental schools in the country."
Final year dental student Muhammad Jasat said: "Working in the DPU has been an enjoyable, valuable experience.
"I have enjoyed the general practice atmosphere that the DPU offers and feel that working in it has improved my clinical decision making and patient management skills."
