Mosque approved

CAMPAIGNERS fighting plans for a new mosque in their community lost their battle after Sheffield Council planners gave the scheme permission.

The decision paves the way for a four-storey building, complete with 40ft minaret, in the suburb of Grimesthorpe, between the city centre and Meadowhall.

Councillors approved the scheme despite strong opposition from people who live near to the site, which is bounded by Petre Street and Botham Street.

Before yesterday afternoon's meeting, protesters said they had been given no warning that the decision was to be made, and accused the council of "sharp practice".

Muslim leaders submitted an application for the place of worship more than two years ago, but the idea was dropped after it met serious opposition.

Angry people living close to the site said they were told they would be kept informed of developments by planning officers but claimed they had heard nothing until the application appeared on an agenda for yesterday's meeting.
