The M1 was shut in both directions at junction 46, east of Leeds near Colton, following the collision just before 1.30am.
A West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said it appeared a Fiat Punto lost control and hit the central reservation before coming to rest across the carriageway.
A lorry stopped short of the stricken car but a second HGV, which was travelling behind, was in collision with the first truck. Its driver suffered fatal injuries.
The northbound carriageway reopened just before 9am and the motorway southbound was opened at 11.30am.
The police spokeswoman confirmed one person had been arrested.
