Move for 'community toilet scheme'

EXISTING businesses could be asked to bring relief to some of York's residents and four million visitors by allowing the public to use their toilets.

York Council carried out a review of public toilets in the city last year to improve the service and now businesses with suitable facilities may be asked to help.

Council executive member for neighbourhood services Ann Reid will be asked to approve plans to recruit local businesses to a community toilet scheme.

It would let the public use facilities in businesses in return for a financial retainer from the council. The scheme is already used successfully in other parts of the country and would increase the number and location of public toilets in York.

As part of the review, York's public conveniences were independently assessed by ENCAMS – formerly the Tidy Britain Group – and York Access Group. They found that the majority of toilet facilities were structurally sound but needed modernisation and decoration work.

Coun Reid will be asked to consider whether to continue to maintain the facilities in-house or to go into partnership with the private sector.
