MP to hold talks over new defence plan for East Coast
AN MP is to hold talks this week with the architects of a plan to abandon large swathes of the East Coast to the elements.
The Humber Estuary Coastal Authorities Group has produced a draft version of its second shoreline management plan (SMP), covering an area from Flamborough in the north to Gibraltar Point, Lincolnshire, in the south.
Under the plan, the current defence line would be held at Bridlington, Hornsea, Mappleton and Withernsea, as well as at the Dimlington and Easington gas terminals.
One difference from the earlier SMP is that it proposes managing the problem of "outflanking", caused by the sea cutting in round the edge of defences at the three major towns, by building additional defences.
Spurn Point, where the country's only full-time lifeboat station is based, would only get intervention to maintain access.
The east coast is the fastest-eroding coastline in western Europe, disappearing at a rate of seven feet a year to the south of Hornsea. Less than six miles have sea defences.
Beverley and Holderness MP Graham Stuart will meet representatives of the group and the Environment Agency on Friday.
He said: "This plan is an attempt at a compromise. It tries to strike a balance between what can be done and what should be done to either stop the natural processes of erosion or allow them to take their course. So it is important residents speak up and let the authorities know which parts of this plan are good and which are not."
The consultation events will be held at Skeffling Village Hall on December 8; the Shores Centre, Withernsea, on December 10; Hornsea Floral Hall on December 14; and at Bridlington Spa on December 15.
