Museum's Egypt exhibition follows in footsteps of Victorian traveller
STAFF at Cannon Hall Museum, near Cawthorne, have been preparing a new exhibition on the theme of ancient Egypt.
The Francis Frith's Egypt exhibition, set to open next Wednesday, September 9, is made up of photographs and ancient objects, including a mummy's mask, jewellery, pottery and textiles.
To take the photographs, modern Egyptologist Bob Partridge followed in the footsteps of well-known Victorian photographer Francis Frith, and the exhibition compares a selection of Frith's 19th century photographs with modern views.
Although the examples of ancient Egyptian architecture which Frith photographed had survived for thousands of years, in the century-and-a-half since then some have deteriorated further, vanished or been moved.
Born in Chesterfield, Frith founded the Frith & Hayward photography studio in Liverpool and journeyed to the Middle East on three occasions, the first of which was a trip to Egypt in 1856.
To accompany the photographs, which have been loaned to Cannon Hall by the Kirklees Community History Service, a number of artefacts from Harrogate Museums' Egyptology collection have also gone on show.
The exhibition will close on Sunday, November 1.
