Musicians track down unusual venue

Musicians singer Suzanne Fatta, centre, Tom Adams, left, and Joel Hughes from York University were fine-tuning their performances yesterday ahead of a concert set among some of the nation's most historic locomotives at the weekend.

The university students were at the National Railway Museum (NRM) in York to test its acoustics before they perform in the Halls of Harmonies concert on Saturday.

The exotic sounds of Europe and Asia will ring out from the galleries during the concert, which is being staged around locomotives in the Great Hall of the NRM.

The Hall of Harmonies event, promoted by York University, features singers performing a huge range of music from sections of Monteverdi’s choral masterpiece the Vespers of 1610 to popular Japanese melodies. New compositions have also been written for the concert.

The university’s concerts administrator, Celia Frisby, said: “Performing amongst the trains provides fascinating musical opportunities and we can expect some real surprises and delights.”

The performance begins at 7 pm and tickets priced between 3 for students and 10 are available from the university’s box office on 01904 432439.
