New-look casino offers 'change of emphasis'

A NEW 24-hour casino is set to open its doors in Sheffield next month, following the closure of the Grosvenor Casino in Duchess Road.

The existing establishment will close at the end of this month and be replaced with the new 5m "G Casino", which is also run by the Rank group.

A spokesman said the new 23,500 sq ft venue will create up to 50 jobs and offer 10 gaming tables, 33 electronic gaming terminals and 24 jackpot slot machines, as well as a 100-seat poker room.

However, the emphasis will also be on non-gambling activities. A lounge area will screen sporting events, there will be a stage offering live entertainment and there will also be a 62-seater restaurant, The Gallery, serving Mediterranean-influenced cuisine.

Ian Turver, general manager of G Casino Sheffield said: "We're delighted to launch the UK's tenth G Casino in Sheffield and look forward to introducing a new leisure venue to the city.

"The G brand is all about giving people a great alternative for a night out and the new Sheffield casino does just that.

"It differs from the Grosvenor Casino in that we'll be putting as much emphasis on the non-gaming activities such as the live entertainment and the restaurant as we will the gaming.

"This means the new venue will appeal to many different types of people whether they've been to a casino before or not."

Mr Turver added that the casino would have a more friendly environment.

He said: "The environment makes all the difference. The new G Casino will have a modern, contemporary look and feel.

"We're working hard to remove some of those barriers often associated with casinos and believe the new venue offers a fun and friendly atmosphere which will be welcomed by the people of Sheffield."
