New look for school keeps listed building

PLANS to revamp the Grade Two-listed King Edward VII School in Sheffield have gone on display.

Leaders at Sheffield Council say they want parents and residents living near the school, in Broomhill, to help them decide the future look of the school building. The listed part of the building and the frontage, however, will not be changed.

The redevelopment works are part of the Building Schools for the Future programme currently taking place in Sheffield, which has already seen refurbishments completed by Taylor Woodrow – part of VINCI Construction UK – at Silverdale, Yewlands, Newfield and Talbot Special school.

All of the city's 31 secondary schools will receive attention under the 400m scheme, and 21 will either be demolished and rebuilt or substantially refurbished.

Sheffield Council cabinet member for children's services and lifelong learning Coun Andrew Sangar said: "We have come a long way in a short space of time with our city schools.

"At King Edward's we want parents to be involved in the design process and we are planning to set up a special liaison group.

"It is vital that we get the design at this school right as it is a listed building and any refurbishment must be handled sensitively.

"This may limit us as to what we can put in place, but whatever is decided needs to complement not only the school, but also the area."

Options for the redevelopment works include a new extension to the rear and plans to alter the car parking.

The aim of the works, a spokesman for Sheffield Council said, is to "create a centre of excellence for science and technology."

"The school is already providing good teaching and learning in these areas, but the new building would see all the expertise in one self-contained block."

Displays outlining the proposed plans for King Edward VII have gone on show both at the school and at nearby Broomhill library.
