New scam as callers offer a refund

COUNCIL tax payers in Kirklees have been warned not to give out their bank details to fraudsters.

In a new scam fraudsters have been telephoning people telling them they are due a council tax refund. They then ask for their bank account details so they can arrange for a non-existent refund to be made.

Although the impostors claim to be working on behalf of Kirklees Council, they believed to be calling from abroad.

In one incident in Kirklees a customer was told their son was due a refund, but he is not responsible for paying council tax so they became suspicious. They did not give out their details and reported the incident to the council. Joint cabinet member for corporate services Coun Shabir Pandor said: "Simply by being vigilant and using common sense we can stop this scam." He urged people not give out personal details over the telephone. Anyone who is due a council tax refund will be sent a bill from the council."

Anyone unsure of the identity of a caller can ask for an extension number and call them at the council on 01484 221000 to check.
