‘No closure’ in verdict on Mexico death fall

The mother of a man who fell to his death on holiday is still looking for closure after an open verdict was recorded in the case.

Adam Pemberton, of Fawcett Vale, Rodley, Leeds, fell to his death in June last year during a holiday to Cancun, Mexico.

The 24-year-old groundworker had been staying at a hotel with his girlfriend, Rosanna Broughan, and had been drinking with some other guests the night before his body was found on June 16, an inquest heard yesterday.

Coroner Roger Whittaker said Mr Pemberton had fallen from a height and that the likelihood was that he fell from his friends’ balcony.

Recording an open verdict Mr Whittaker said: “There is no evidence of any foul play, but I cannot rule it out. Nor is there any other evidence to suggest it was anything other than an accident but there is insufficient evidence to establish that.”

The inquest at Bradford Coroner’s Court heard that the evening before Mr Pemberton died, “there had been quite a lot of drink consumed” but it was not possible to establish how much he had.

That evening Mr Pemberton had been in the lobby bar with some fellow guests before they went back to the room of one of them to carry on drinking and listen to music.

In a statement read to the court, one of the guests, Russell Pinder, said that after Ms Broughan turned up he and Mr Pemberton went to the bar for more drinks – eight sambucas and eight daiquiris. After another trip to the bar Mr Pemberton decided to stay there with some guests.

The inquest heard that Ms Broughan later went to look for her boyfriend with one of the group they had been drinking with but could not find him.

At one point when she returned to her room, she realised $480 was missing.

Mr Pemberton’s body was found in a shrubbery on the ground floor. He died of multiple injuries.

Speaking after the hearing Mr Pemberton’s mother, Heather, welcomed the verdict but said it brought no closure.

She said her son loved life and was “still in everybody’s heart”.

My heart breaks for Adam and his family. There is no justice when you die in Mexico. Mexico is a dangerous country to travel to period! Many tragic deaths happen inside of the resorts and are a direct result of poor or nonexistent safety standards.
