Now Jane Tomlinson's charity aims for £5million

The charity set up by Yorkshire campaigner Jane Tomlinson has raised more than £2m – and has now set a new target of £5m.

Before her death in 2007, Jane raised 1.85m in a series of incredible physical challenges. Today her husband Mike and their children Suzanne, Rebecca and Steven, will announce that Jane's Appeal has beaten her 2m goal and confirm the ambitious new target.

Mr Tomlinson said: "Last Saturday would have been Jane's 45th birthday. It was an emotional day but we could think of no better way to honour her than to announce that we have reached her goal.

"When in August 2000 Jane was told she was unlikely to live beyond six months, no one could have predicted what happened next.

"Since then thousands of people have helped us raise 400 times more than we'd initially hoped."

All the money is shared between children's and cancer charities. The charities to benefit are Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice, Cancer Research UK, Hannah House Children's Hospice, Macmillan, Martin House Children's Hospice, Sparks, Yorkshire Cancer Centre and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

Bettys & Taylors of Harrogate, whose staff raised funds for both Jane's Appeal and Martin House in 2008, have made a special Fondant Fancy Party Cake to commemorate the event which will be shared by children at the hospice. This evening the Tomlinson family will attend a special event to say thank you to more than 250 guests.

The Yorkshire Post is media partner for the Leeds 10k: Jane Tomlin-son's Run For All. Details can be obtained here. The event is on Sunday, June 21.
