Objectors work with council over square's future

CRITICS who took their district council to the High Court in a legal wrangle which delayed development of the authority's proposed new headquarters are now working with the council.

Richmondshire District Council has drawn up a list of possible options for the future use of the Yorke Square car park in Richmond with the Save Our Shire campaign group, which opposed a block of 14 flats on the site.

Now a period of public consultation will run throughout June, with a drop-in event on June 10. It will be held at The Station in Richmond and will involve photographs and maps of Yorke Square, as well as

displays showing possible future uses.

Community groups are being invited to put together their own displays outlining what they would like to see happen at Yorke Square.

Displays and information are being distributed throughout Richmondshire Council's Community Offices and Tourist Information Centres, together with a display at Yorke Square.

Dozens of posters and hundreds of "comment cards" have been printed and there will be a phone number to ring as well as a website richmondshire.

gov.uk/yorkesquare. The consultation period will run until June 25.

Richmondshire Council leader Melva Steckles said: "We are starting the public consultation on Yorke Square from a 'blank page' and we want residents from across Richmondshire to help us fill it in.

"Over the coming weeks we'll be working hard to make sure as many people as possible have the chance to do just that."

Councillors Linda Curran and Stuart Parsons, who represent the Richmond West ward, said: "It is very important that everyone who wants to has their say on the future of Yorke Square."

Save Our Shire spokesman John McDonald said: "Developing Yorke Square as a top-quality car park will draw visitors to the riverside and all its amenities. Making residents and visitors all feel welcome in this way is crucial to Richmond's future prosperity."

The aim of the public consultation is to draw up a shortlist of options for the future of Yorke Square, which will then be brought back to council members for a decision.
