Oil giant faces boycott over poppy ban
Forces veterans have attacked oil giant Shell over a ban on poppy appeal collections at its petrol stations.
Veterans groups will this week discuss organising a boycott of the firm over the decision of Shell Retail, which runs more than 1,000 service stations in the UK, to impose the ban.
The issue was raised last week with the company which says it already contributes to a number of charities and would not be allowing other charities to use its forecourt network – although it has agreed to project an image of a poppy on to its corporate HQ in London to show its support.
Geoff Murray, secretary of the Commando Veterans' Association, said he was astonished by the decision.
"Most people will regard this as an insult to our veterans. I am sure that many of our members will be concerned enough about this to consider boycotting Shell," he said.
Poppy sellers in Swindon last week forced retail group Marks and Spencer into a climbdown after they were told they could not collect money outside the town's store because it was not one of its designated charities.
Following an outcry, Derbyshire County Council also reversed a ban on poppy collection boxes in its 48 libraries.
