Old fashioned counter culture gets the exhibition treatment

IN times gone by shopkeepers often had their portrait taken as they stood proudly outside their shop.

Now an exhibition by Roger Moody, entitled Step Inside Shipley has opened, aimed at encouraging customers to visit the shops and meet the people who run them.

He said: "I hope this exhibition will replicate this tradition and capture a moment in time from 2010.

"May I invite people to visit my photographic exhibition at Shipley Focus'd, which looks to the future of Shipley taking its inspiration from the past.

"Through my images, I capture the personality of the people who are the lifeblood of the shops and businesses of Shipley town centre.

"Some of the shops featured are small independent ventures, which have the benefit of offering an individual and personal service, which can sometimes be missed in much larger corporate chains.

"These smaller businesses create the variety needed to sustain a unique local shopping experience and this exhibition demonstrates the importance of this.

"The exhibition complements the previous Shipley Focus'd photographic gallery which features pictures from the 1930s to the 1960s taken from the archives of C H Wood.

"Shipley Focus'd was created from an empty shop to regenerate interest in Shipley town centre, so it was fitting that this second exhibition should be a celebration of the vibrancy and thriving community spirit within the Shipley retail sector."

The Bradford-area exhibition runs until October 1.
