Outcry as bowlers use live ferrets for balls

The RSPCA has launched an inquiry after workers at a Yorkshire YMCA were filmed using live ferrets as balls in an apparent game of skittles.

Footage of a man and a woman flinging the pets along the floor of the YMCA in Halifax has been broadcast across the globe after it was posted on the internet.

The animals can be seen knocking down what appear to be skittles made from empty drinks bottles.

Mandi Barr, RSPCA inspector, said: "We have become aware of the videos posted on YouTube in the last couple of days, and are looking into what happened."

Bosses at the YMCA in Halifax declined to comment.

YMCA England, which is a separate organisation to Halifax YMCA, learned earlier this week that possession of ferrets on the premises of Halifax YMCA had been discovered last October and were removed immediately.

A spokesman for YMCA England said: "What we've seen is highly inappropriate behaviour. We in no way condone animal cruelty. We will support the RSPCA in any investigation."

The footage has now been removed from YouTube.
