FINISHING touches are being put to Sheffield’s newest park, which is set to be officially opened with a parade and entertainment this weekend.

The centrepiece of South Street Park, above Sheffield railway station and close to Park Hill flats, will be an open-air “ampitheatre” to be used for public events.

More than 100 trees of 18 different species have been planted, in what is believed to be the first city centre arboretum in the country.

The park also provides a safe and well-lit walking route from the railway station through to communities in Norfolk Park and Park Hill.

At noon on Saturday, a large crowd will gather near to Sheffield Hallam University’s city centre campus and parade through the railway station and up to the new park.

This will be followed with a formal opening ceremony at the amphitheatre, led by Sheffield Council leader Julie Dore, and then a programme of music, dance and theatre events.

Stalls, refreshments and other attractions will also be in the new park throughout the afternoon.

Coun Dore said: “This is a great addition to Sheffield’s wonderful collection of parks and another city centre space which we hope can be used by Tramlines and other events.

“It is also a great place to come and just enjoy one of the best views over the city and right out to the edge of the Peak District.”

Eventually it is intended that South Street Park will become part of the wider Sheaf Valley Park, which will stretch from Victoria Quays through the middle of Park Square roundabout to Norfolk Park, in front of Park Hill flats.
