Park steps back in time as council opens photo archive

A COLLECTION of photographs have been put on display which chronicle the history of a popular park and museum.

The display at Tolson Museum in Huddersfield – formerly known as Ravensknowle Hall – shows the early days of the hall, its transformation into a museum in the 1920s, the history of Ravensknowle Park and the people who have visited over the years.

Tolson Museum and Ravensknowle Park have belonged to the people of Huddersfield for over 90 years.

A Kirklees Council spokesman said: “This collection of photographs will inspire and inform any future development of the museum and park.”

The council is inviting people to join the newly-formed “Friends of Tolson and Ravensknowle” group.

Many of the photos are from the Kirklees Image Archive, which looks after an extensive collection of images from across the borough.

The archive can be viewed on line at www.kirkleesimages.org.uk. Members of the public can add their own photos of the park, museum and people to both the exhibition and the Kirklees archive.

Contact the museum on 01484 223830 or email digital photos to Tolson.museum@kirklees.gov.uk

This exhibition is free of charge and accessible by stairs only.
